Did you know your gastrointestinal tract is lined with taste receptors? When the tongue/GI tract tastes sweet, regardless of whether there are any calories or not, our bodies prepare themselves for a carbohydrate/sugar load with a dance of hormones including insulin. What does this mean? For many of us, a sugar crash...even after a smoothie with little or no actual sugar.
Please don't be fooled by zero grams of sugar. Remember the simple rule; if it tastes sweet, it is dessert. Use discernment with your sweeteners. Avoid the man-made artificial sweeteners, and instead, choose honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, lo han fruit, stevia, and other natural sweeteners. But, use them sparingly. For most dessert recipes, you can reduce the sugar by 50% and substitute coconut sugar. Don't forget hidden sugars like rice flour potato starch and refined flours. Lean toward grain-free and Paleo treats to keep your body running optimally. |
